Building plastics firm goes online during lockdown

Gambar
Building plastics supplier Horton Building Plastics believes e-commerce will be the way forward for them coming out of the coronavirus crisis. The company – which has trade counters at Cobridge and Parkhall – closed its doors to customers in March following the lockdown announcement. But it has used the opportunity to kickstart its online business which sells everything from timber and plywood to doors and windows. Rob Horton said: "We shut both of our sites because it just didn't feel safe, so we furloughed 20 staff and there was just me and one other director still working. "We have been wanting to launch our e-commerce business for a while now, but we never really had the chance to give it the push it needed to make a good go of it. "We decided to team up with PAB Logistics, in Newcastle, so we can offer a nationwide delivery service – and now we are generating online sales of £10,000 a week." What More UK, the plastic houseware organisation behind the home storage brand Wham, has announced the latest in a series of multimillion-pound investments at its Altham manufacturing site in Lancashire. The new development will provide 26,000 sq ft of extra distribution space and operate as a link between the existing buildings 5 (110,000 sq ft) and 6 (95,000 sq ft). The organisation currently runs manufacturing, distribution and office space extending over 500,000 sq ft across its two sites, Altham and Shuttleworth Mead, in Padiham, Lancashire. This announcement comes on the back of record turnover in 2019, and positive business results since January of this year continuing right through the current health crisis, culminating in this month being the best May in the group's 21-year history. Company director Tony Grimshaw said: "The manufacturing sector in Lancashire, and the whole of the UK, is ready, willing and able to supply the country's retailers in June when they ar

Improve water supply in poorer nations to cut plastic use say experts

Gambar
Focusing on improving the water supply in developing nations could be a powerful way to fight the scourge of plastic waste in the oceans, experts have said, highlighting that the issue has received little attention. People in developing countries, and many middle-income countries, often rely on plastic bottles of water as their piped water supply can be contaminated or unsafe, or perceived as such. Hundreds of billions of plastic water bottles are produced each year. In rich countries, they are a thoughtless luxury, but in many poor and emerging economies people have few alternatives. "It is an issue, as the water supply system has problems with water quality in many countries," said Brajesh Dubey, professor of civil engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur, co-author of a new "blue paper" on the problem of plastic waste in the oceans. "The obvious solution is building a safe water supply infrastructure which ensures quality supply

INDONESIA, May 24 (Jakarta Post/ANN) - Soft drinks manufacturer Coca Cola Amatil Indonesia (Amatil) is looking into developing a plastic bottle recycling facility in one of the world's top plastic polluting countries. The company said on Friday it had signed a deal with plastic packaging maker Dynapack Asia to conduct a feasibility study on developing the facility. The soft drinks maker also said it aimed to cut consumption of new plastic resin by up to 25,000 tons a year by 2022 by using recycled plastic. The statement did not mention Amatil's total annual new plastic resin consumption. However, a 2019 report shows that the Coca-Cola Company produced 3 million tons of plastic packaging in 2017, the highest among 31 companies listed in the report. Lockdown Lego: The enthusiasts building mini masterpieces

Gambar
Thousands of Lego-builders have been taking advantage of lockdown and making use of their spare time to create stop-motion movies and models of real-life constructions. The Danish toy has been the subject of more internet searches during lockdown than in the same months in previous years, while in March the search term "Lego challenge" reached a "record high", according to Google Trends. So, why have so many people turned to the little plastic bricks for entertainment and what comfort has it brought while holed up at home? 'The fireball was a 'don't try this at home' moment' "I never expected it to get this much exposure - I've had more credit for this than for my actual work," said composer Jon Opstad. With the help of his six-year-old son Ollie and four-year-old daughter Alice, he has been recreating famous James Bond scenes from the likes of Thunderball and The Living Daylights. Their stop-motion animation of "the

Birds 'ingesting hundreds of plastic pieces a day'

Gambar
Birds living on river banks are ingesting plastic at the rate of hundreds of tiny fragments a day, according to a new study. Scientists say this is the first clear evidence that plastic pollutants in rivers are finding their way into wildlife and moving up the food chain. Pieces of plastic 5mm or smaller (microplastics), including polyester, polypropylene and nylon, are known to pollute rivers. The impacts on wildlife are unclear. Researchers at Cardiff University looked at plastic pollutants found in a bird known as a dipper, which wades or dives into rivers in search of underwater insects. "These iconic birds, the dippers, are ingesting hundreds of pieces of plastic every day," said Prof Steve Ormerod of Cardiff University's Water Research Institute. "They're also feeding this material to their chicks." Previous research has shown that half of the insects in the rivers of south Wales contain microplastic fragments. "The fact that so many river inse

How to Begin Building Gundam and Other Plastic Model Kits

Gambar
For decades, model kits have gone hand in hand with mecha anime and video games. Maybe you grew up watching Gundam Wing or picked up Sakura Wars on the PlayStation 4! Now you want your own pint-sized mech to grace your desk or bookshelf. The world of model kits can seem daunting at first, but with a plethora of easy to pickup kits to choose from, and a few simple tips, you'll be building your own squad of Zaku in no time. THE TOOLS FOR THE JOB If you wanna get started, you'll need a few basic tools: A pair of nippers A sanding tool of choice A hobby knife (e.g. an X-Acto knife) The nippers are there to cut the parts off the plastic "gates," or runners they come attached between. Companies like Tamiya and Mr. Hobby sell their own specially designed nippers. You can also use wirecutters or side-cutters advertised for cutting jewelry from your local hardware and hobby stores (e.g. Michael's). Just keep in mind you want something suited for working with (

Environmentalists concerned about increase in single-use plastics during pandemic

Gambar
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) – When COVID-19 hit the U.S., many parts of normal life were put on pause. Environmentalists said waste initiatives were put on the back burner as well. "We were scared, I was scared. I didn't know what was happening. Sustainability has always been a part of my life, but it wasn't first on my list, it wasn't my priority at the time," Zero Waste Trash Talk Creator Marissa Masellis said. Single-use plastics have significantly increased during the pandemic as carry out options become more popular for consumers. "Whether that is utensils and Styrofoam containers for take out food, or the disposable gloves and masks, people are using more single-use plastics now than approximately a year ago," Tennessee Riverkeeper Executive Director David Whiteside said. Whiteside suggested people speak up when ordering out to protect the environment from further

Northwest Navy Units Knock Down Barriers by Literally Building Them

Gambar
Not long ago, the concept of placing physical barriers between people to enhance communication may have seemed counter-intuitive. But that didn't stop members of Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC) Northwest from building and installing sneeze guards in various facilities across Naval Base Kitsap (NBK). At the request of NBK's Fleet and Family Readiness Department, NAVFAC Northwest's Public Works Department (PWD) Kitsap is manufacturing and fitting clear acrylic plastic, also known as Plexiglas, shields. "I feel okay coming to work when we use the Plexiglas to maintain safe social distancing because it's safer to have the glass as a barrier whenever we're interacting with the guests," said Monique Sebastian, a front desk associate at Bremerton Naval Gateway Inns & Suites (NGIS). "Sometimes you can't m

Plastic is unsung life-saver during this health crisis so let’s not demonise it

Gambar
Face visors, goggles, medical gloves, aprons and gowns are all made out of plastic materials (Image: Getty) It's good news then that top British scientists have been exploring ways to make plastic much more environmentally friendly. Over a billion items of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) were used by the NHS in the first month of the health crisis and since then millions more have been made in the UK or flown in from abroad. This includes face visors, goggles, medical gloves, aprons and gowns. All of them made out of plastic materials and all of them saving lives on a daily basis throughout our care services. Without these plastic shields, all our doctors and nurses would have little protection against the ruthless virus spread by coughing. Much of this kit is single-use, disposed of once it has served its daily purpose, but that means the NHS is hungry for plastic. It's fortunate that the UK is home to one of the world's biggest plastics-producing industrialists.   &qu

Sneeze Guards West LA Plastics Company Sees Boom in Business Fulfilling Orders for Plastic Shields Amid Pandemic Since viruses can remain on plastic for up to 72 hours, even barriers must be cleaned constantly, just like any work space.  By Kim Baldonado • Published May 15, 2020• Updated on May 15, 2020 at 7:50 pm NBC Universal, Inc.
